Hey readers! So this post today is probably going to be a review for you, but it’s going to be a beneficial one. I know for me personally, I can kinda ‘space out’ when my pastor preaches on the gospel. I think to myself “oh, I already believe this, and I know it by heart so I don’t need to listen,” but this is such terrible, lazy logic. We need the gospel, it is our literal life-breath. We must never discount the gospel so if you know it please keep reading anyway.
So the gospel literally means ‘good news.’ What is this ‘good news?’ First and foremost the gospel is the ONLY way that a person can be saved. John 14:6 confirms this loud and clear, “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” Simply put Jesus’ death and resurrection can save everyone; past, present, and future.
To truly grasp the depth of the gospel we much first realize our need for it. If we don’t need to be saved then it wouldn’t be necessary. Think about your life as you read these questions.
- Have you ever lied about anything..even a ‘white’ lie? Proverbs 12:22 “The Lord detests lying lips, but He delights in people who are trustworthy.”
- Have you ever coveted (wanted deeply) another person’s things? Exodus 20:17, “You shall not covet…anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
- Have you ever hated someone? 1 John 3:15 “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.”
I know if I think truthfully about myself, I have done all of these things a LOT of times. So now that we see ourselves for who we truly are, a liar, a covetous person, and a hater we see that we need saving. If God is a holy and righteous judge how can He let terrible people like us into heaven? Well, that’s where Jesus comes in…
Many of us already know this story, but it’s good to hear it again. Jesus came down from heaven in the form of a baby. He lived a perfect life but chose to be crucified on a cross for us. His sinless life gave us the way to salvation. Isaiah 53:4 speaks of this, “Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging, we are healed.”
What great words to think about. God gave us a way to be saved from utter destruction, so why not take it? We deserve to be sent to Hell, but through God’s mercy, He sent His son to die on a cross so that He would be the propitiation (satisfaction) for our sins. Jesus reconciled us so that we can have a relationship with God.
So what can we do about it then? Well first we must realize our need for a savior, we must repent from our sinful way of life, and then finally we must ask God for forgiveness.
I know my life did a complete 180 when I repented of my sins and asked for His forgiveness. I am no longer master of my life, my God is. I know that sounds crazy, but when you look at the true God of the Bible, it brings so much peace. I would so much rather have God, who is holy, all-knowing, and who does everything for my good in charge of my life. He knows what is best for me and will do that. It might not always be what I want necessarily, but we are assured that it will be the best for us.
Jesus is the only way that we can have eternal life. He is the only way that we can meet God in Heaven when we die. Do you know what will happen to you when you die? It’s a scary thought if you don’t know, but the Bible tells us. Those who follow after Him and realize their need for salvation will enter Heaven, while those who reject His words will go down to the pit. Matthew 7:14 says, “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
I pray that you earnestly think over these things and that you will accept them. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me. Thank you so much for reading I really appreciate it. Thank you.
